Man City boss Pep Guardiola says Erling Haaland new long-term contract is a sign of the Norwegian striker’s trust in the club.

The nine-and-a-half-year deal, which runs until 2034, is unprecedented in the Premier League and will make Haaland one of the highest-paid players in the sport.

“It’s about trust,” Guardiola said.

“When a player decides to sign a contract like this, it’s because he wants to show how committed he is to being here.”

“He’s a perfect fit. He loves the club and the people around him. He loves the Premier League. He’s here with his wife and his parents and has decided there’s no better place to be in the next 10 years. So he and his family have decided to stay here.”

It is understood that Haaland’s exit clause in his previous contract, which expired in 2027, has been removed.

There is reportedly a termination clause in the contract that will come into effect in 2029. Although this has not been confirmed by City or the player’s representatives.

With the contract length being longer than Chelsea have typically been under his current ownership. Guardiola said he had to clarify the length of the deal when he was first told.

“I asked, ‘Say that again? Are you sure?’ It’s good news. It means a lot.”
